The New Season

I admit it – I’m a TV dunce. I haven’t seen any of the new season’s TV shows, even though some of them look pretty interesting. Crusoe, for example.

Where has Philip Winchester been all these years? He looks great! And with Sam Neil and Sean Bean supporting, how could this be bad? (Although Sean did star in that awful thing, Hitcher, didn’t he?)

How about CSI - the original one. Is William Peterson still Grissom? And what happened to Sarah? Is she gone this season?

I’ve never seen Dancing with the Stars or American Idol – and I have to admit it kind of annoys me to see these shows making headlines in the news, for heaven’s sake! They’re TV shows, not stories of national importance! And what is up with Deal or No Deal? Should I spend 30 minutes of my life – 30 minutes that I will never get back – on this?

OK, so I’m putting it to you – what are the shows I should not miss this season? What should I clear my schedule for, and make time to watch the first time around?

I think one of the reasons Dancing with the Stars is making headlines is because everyone is getting injured this season.

Not to be missed shows…I’m running through my head the shows I watch during the week and I can’t think of any that couldn’t be missed. I usually play catch up on the weekends as it is – I watched two weeks worth of shows this past weekend so obviously it’s not must as it happens TV. Kind of makes me wonder if I could just do without it altogether.

Would clear up some time for other things. Something to think about…

Personally, I think Dancing with the Stars and American Idol only make “news” when it’s their station covering them. Which I find ethically just wrong. That’s not news, that’s advertising. But that’s a soap box for another day.

As for new shows, I think the only new show we’ve added is the Ex-List, which so far has been pretty cute. We’ve watched a couple of episodes of Fringe, but we’re still undecided on that. I think both the Ex-list and Fringe of the potential to be way too repetitive. But I thought the same thing four seasons ago about House and I still enjoy the h*ll out of that.

I’m just glad Pushing Daisies is back on, ’cause I just love it. And Supernatural, it continues to be my guilty pleasure. But neither of those are new.

I haven’t seen anything, Margo, except a few episodes of The Chef Jeff Project on the Food Network. Anyone watched that? Oh, I also watched part of one episode of Dogtown on National Geographic or Animal Planet. I just don’t have much interest in TV lately.

Shana, I’ve been TIVOing the Chef Jeff Project – I haven’t seen them all, but the episodes I’ve seen have been fascinating.

Margo, this isn’t a new show this season, but it was last season – Chuck – it’s so fun and entertaining, what quality TV should be. I actually haven’t added any new shows this season, we already record more than enough. I’m a big fan of Shonda Rimes (Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice) she does great characters and fantastic dialogue. They tend to lean toward the evening soap style, but her characters have real consequences to their actions, which I love.

Out of all the new shows that have came out I watch Fringe, Eleventh Hour (casting Rufus Sewell was genius), 90210, Knight Rider, and Sanctuary.

I also watch Gossip Girl, Heroes, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, Smallville, and Supernatural. It’s always a pretty full week.

    Hi cousin:

Fringe is an interesting sci-fi. We’ve seen it a couple times. I like House for obvious reasons, The Mentalist is ok, but not special, except for Simon what’shisname?

Recently I’ve started to collect shows and then gorge on them in one sitting. Then I can go back to reading!

Hey Nancy! Fancy seeing you here! I hope you’re all recovered now from your trip to Poland and the ensuing cold.

I second Jane on The Office. I’d never seen it until this summer when a friend of my daughter insisted we go to Blockbuster and start with season one and work our way forward in anticipation of the new (5th) season. We did, and it was like a drug. Though, I must admit, at first, I was scratching my head… Then, I was saying, “He did NOT say that…then I was hooked. Clever, clever humor/writing and fabulous characterization. But the thing with The Office is to get the most out of it you have to see all the episodes because they work in clever jokes that build on past shows. Such as this one where one of the characters comes out of the men’s bathroom looking sheepish and carrying a candle. It might be mildly funny if you didn’t know the back story, but if you’d seen all of them it was LOL funny because of a specific past episode. So, The Office gets my vote — even when I’m on “life on hold” deadline, I always make time for it.

Oh — an interesting tidbit – on one of the fourth season disks there’s an “extra” interview with the writers (many of them are also actors on the show). It was fascinating to get a behind the scenes peek into comedy TV writing (a secret dream of mine).
