As the new group of television shows are hitting the screens, I began to wonder if there is any correlation between what we like to read and what we like to watch on television. Are readers of suspense drawn to cop shows and action adventure television shows? Do paranormal readers flip the channel to shows like Supernatural or my last year’s favorite, Moonlight? Do those who like Young Adult gravitate towards Gossip Girl and 90210?
I like to read historicals…primarily the Regency time period, but I also like the old West. I like to read contemporaries, expecially Harlequin and Silhouette books. And I like inspirational romance. Other genres will catch my eye, but what I’ve listed are what I mainly read.
What kind of television shows do I watch? Even though I don’t read much paranormal, I loved Moonlight and New Amsterdam (shows both cancelled after one season). I like House but I’m not much for medical romance. I like 24 although I don’t read much suspense. Gossip Girl has captured my attention, even though I don’t read a lot of YA.
It appears my theory that our reading and television preferences being in synch has been blown out of the water…unless… perhaps I’m the aberration…
So, tell me…what do you primarily read? And does your television viewing match your reading interests? Or are you like me where there appears to be no correlation?

Hmm … interesting theory. But if you’re an aberration, then so am I.
The only area where I overlap is mystery. I like to watch “cozy” style tv mysteries. Like Monk and Psych. And occasionally I like to read cozy mysteries (but not that often).
I love to read romance (obviously), but with tv shows, I like to watch ones with a romance in them, but not where that’s the focus. I love to watch scifi (BSG, ST, etc) but don’t read that at all.
I love House, but never read medical anything. I also love Scrubs. It’s one of my all time favorite shows.
Bummer about New Amsterdam. I really loved that show. But usually, me loving a show is a sure sign it’s going to be cancelled.

Emily,
I had to laugh when I read your comment, “Bummer about New Amsterdam. I really loved that show. But usually, me loving a show is a sure sign it’s going to be cancelled.”
That’s the way it is for me, too. I find one I really love…and it’s off the air!

The tv shows that I’m not in synch with are medical dramas. I love watching them, but don’t read stories like that. Whenever they come up with a paranormal or sci fi show, I’m there, and I love to read the same. I love historical romance, but I sure don’t see much of those on television.
I guess reading and watching are different because I have a choice of a large range of books out there, and only so many shows to choose from. So I get sucked into shows that I might not choose, since I give them a try because there isn’t much to choose from of interest.
And I agree, as soon as they do come up with a wonderful show that I enjoy like Moonlight or Jericho, it gets cancelled right away.

Hmmmm…interesting. I tend to like medical dramas, I loved Chicago Hope and ER (for the first few years) and I really enjoy House and love Grey’s Anatomy, but I’ve never read a medical romance and don’t think I’d find them interesting. I love crime dramas, and in fact that’s probably most of the shows I watch and I love romantic suspense novels and do read the occasional straight thriller. So I guess I’m totally in synch there.

Barbara,
I liked Jericho, too!!
Robyn,
I’d forgotten all about Chicago Hope. That’s probably because it’s been a few years (or more) since it’s been on. But I loved it!

Well, I like TV shows like The Dog Whisperer and House Hunters and design shows. I also like 60 Minutes and Animal Cops. So it seems like I like to watch non-fiction, but I prefer to read fiction, almost exclusively. Weird…

Shane,
I heard they were seeking dogs and their owners to apply to be on The Dog Whisperer. But when I checked it out, I’d have to have gone to LA.
So, I guess my blue heeler will have to continue without the benefits of a Caesar intervention.
