It’s the Final Countdown…
Written by RobynDeHart in Jaunty PostNow for some of you, you now have a certain song playing in your head. You can thank me later. But today I want to talk about a blast from my past and one I still enjoy every now and then.

That’s right, today is all about the 80’s hair band, otherwise known as the make-up wearing, big-haired, leather-pants strutting soft metal bands from my Jr. High and High School days. No one could write a power balled like these bands. They could get you moving your feet and make you almost - almost - want to bang your head, just a little. Come on, you remember. I can’t be the only one.

How pretty was Bret Michaels? It was kind of depressing to a then teenage girl. In any case, those of us who were metal fans knew that Van Halen was a much better band when Sammy Hagar was lead singer.
It’s just short of 10 minutes, but if you were a fan, you’ll enjoy the alphabetical (well, almost) walk down memory lane although admittedly there were a few bands in here that I didn’t recognize and sadly there are no Def Leopard or REO Speedwagon clips.

Yeah, despite the mullet, I certainly had a thing for Joe Elliot. Looking back, not so sure what I was thinking. We’re not talking high quality music here, but I will always have a fondness for the love ballads and rocker songs of my past. So how about you, were you a hair band fan? Or what kind of music from your past do you have a soft spot for?
*A side note - for anyone who is interested I’m starting a writing class today with Celtic Hearts. If you’re interested, shoot me an email and I’ll send you the info.

Cindy Kirk Says:
Robyn,
I loved Bon Jovi back then and I still feel that way. That’s why they are in my My Space Top 10.
As far as I’m concerned Jon Bon Jovi is still as hot today as he was back then!!
Shana Says:
I was never into the hair bands. I liked Depeche Mode, the Cure, the Smiths. Last night I watched a movie called Control about Joy Divison–ah, the memories. I can definitely relate to your walk down memory lane!
Jane Says:
This holiday weekend VH1 Classics is showing 80 hours of 80’s videos. I’m watching a Wham video right now. I caught a bunch of Journey and Howard Jones videos. My tastes are similar to Shana’s. I loved New Order and Depeche Mode.
Emily McKay Says:
Ah, Shana, a woman after my own heart! I’m a big, big The Smiths fan. And the Cure and Depeche Mode too, of course.
but still, since I love all things ’80’s I watched all 9:56 minutes of the hairband tribute. The Geek sat next to me offering commentary on which he had on tape or CD or had seen in concert. “Oh, yeah, I saw Whoever. Well, they opened for That Other Band.”
I will admit this though … I do love REO Speedwagon. I think they date back to my pre-musical outcast days.
Quilt Lady Says:
Thanks for the blast from the past. Still missed REO Speedwagon,Keep on Loveing you, I always like 70’s and 80’s music and still do. I think there should have been some Queen in there too.
