Anchovies, anyone?

Written by Cindy Kirk in Jaunty Post

Although I’m not a gourmet (by any stretch of the imagination) I know what kinds of foods I like …and which ones I don’t

I read an article recently that listed the top twenty most hated foods. Some I expected, while others, well, frankly I was surprised. I’m going to count them down. See if you agree with the survey results.

1. Liver (I know, it’s gross, but I still like it…with onions–see #17)
2. Lima Beans (I like these, too. In fact they’re one of my favs)
3. Mayonnaise (what’s to dislike?)
4. Mushrooms (I like them, but I know tons of people who refuse to eat ‘em)
5. Eggs (No egg salad sandwiches or deviled eggs??)
6. Okra (Never eat)
7. Beets (these I like hot or cold)
8. Brussels sprouts (okay, not my fav but I can eat them in a pinch)
9. Tuna (I like tuna sandwiches and tuna salad casserole and…)
10. Gelatin (seems almost un-American to not like Jello)
11. Sour Cream (a baked potato wouldn’t be the same without SC)
12. Pea Soup (I like this too. Hmm, I’m sensing a pattern heres…)
13. Oysters (Okay, I draw the line at these. YUCK says it all)
14. Peas (Like ‘em, not love ‘em)
15. Raisins (Especially good on oatmeal or in cookies)
16. Cooked Carrots (I like these, too. And I even like creamed cooked carrots!)
17. Onions (I like onions. I think they add a tang to foods)
18. Cilantro (No strong feelings one way or the other on this one)
19. Maple Syrup (If you hate Maple Syrup, what do you put on your pancakes?)
20. Blueberries (I like these…and aren’t they supposed to be good for you?)

I can’t believe one of my most hated foods, anchovies, didn’t make the top twenty.

Were you surprised by what made the list? Or more surprised by what didn’t?

I’m really surprised by some of the entries. Maple syrup? To me, it tastes pretty much like honey (but I’m not a syrup afficionado). Cilantro - my daughter gags at the thought of it. Onions - the males in my family won’t eat them, so I use a lot of onion powder in my cooking.

I don’t like peppers (any kind) although I love black pepper.

I don’t care for snails or mussels, and I don’t like orange-flavored foods. But I love oranges and orange juice.

But eggs? Blueberries? What’s not to like?

I’m a little surprised that eggs, onions, raisins, and maple syrup made the list. I mean come on maple syrup !

I’m not surprised that oysters made the list. I absolutely love them though.

I don’t like 11 out of the 20 things on that list and some of them I’m iffy on. I don’t understand the syrup and blueberry thing either. I don’t believe that there are that many people who don’t like blueberries. Every store and cafe carries blueberry muffins. Someone must be eating those.

Margo, I don’t like eggs. They’re too squishy and the smell. Yuck. I can sometimes eat a quiche, but it has to be in the evening–never first thing in the morning.

    Shana,

I like eggs…but when I read your post about “too squishy and they smell” I found myself thinking…Yeew, maybe I don’t like them after all…

    Linda,

The maple syrup being included has me puzzled as well. Anyone have any thoughts on how maple syrup ended up on the list???

    Margo,

Good point about the snails and mussels…not for me either.

  5. Audrey Says:

Delurking to chime in about the maple syrup. Now, I am apparently a garbage guts because I like 19 of the things on the list (no thanks on the okra) but my DH and all of his siblings dislike maple syrup. Their story is that when young, they went to a big outdoor pancake breakfast and ate themselves sick. I have no idea why since it’s not like their mom never made pancakes at home. None of them like syrup to this day. Maybe because once you’ve been sick on something that sweet, it turns your stomach ever after?

  6. Cindy Kirk Says:

    Audrey,

Thanks for coming out of lurkdom to share! That is really interesting about your DH and all of his siblings….

What do they put on their pancakes?? Just butter?
Or are they okay with the flavored syrups or fruit toppings?

  7. Audrey Says:

I don’t know about his siblings, but DH doesn’t eat pancakes, french toast, waffles, anything that takes syrup. I can’t imagine it myself - what a loss!

  8. Cindy Kirk Says:

    Audrey,

I agree with you…pancakes, french toast and waffles are foods that I dearly love. I can’t imagine doing without them.

    Cindy
