Clutter Control

Written by Cindy Kirk in Jaunty Post

If you would come to my house, you wouldn’t see much clutter or even what my mother used to call “knick-knacks” around the house. And, unlike the picture below, you wouldn’t see disorganized open shelving with everything hanging out.

No, if you would stop by, everything would look great UNLESS you opened my sock drawer or my junk drawer or the drawer where I keep old medicines etc.

Lately I’ve been thinking that I need to get more organized. That I need to attack these hiding places and just get rid of the stuff I’ve forgotten is even in there. My worry is that I’ll find something I thought I gotten rid of years ago and won’t be able to let it go.

I read somewhere that you shouldn’t overwhelm yourself by thinking you have to unclutter in one day (yeah, right, as if that would happen )

So I’ve been trying to decide where to start. I’m actually thinking of doing my sock drawer because that should be simple…after all, there have to be some in there that I no longer need, right? From then I’ll move on the the drawer that holds the old medicines. That should also be easy…because if the drugs are expired, I HAVE to (for safety sake) dump ‘em….so at least those would be gone.

How about you? Is there some clutter in your house that needs to be controlled? If you could just do one bit of de-cluttering this weekend…where would you start?

Oh, honey, that is a loaded question. Right now, we’ve got tons of clutter. It’s just crazy. I blame the two little ones, but I know I’m the one really to blame. (I have trouble getting rid of things.)

The thing I’m really struggling with right now is teaching my girl to put up her toys when she’s done playing. If anyone has any tips for that, I’d love to hear them.

Our basement is huge, and most of it is finished. In the main room (we’ve always called it the playroom) there are shelves and a counter top, with cupboards underneath. I’d start there … We’ve had stuff stored in there for 20 years - stuff I haven’t looked at in all that time. Which means I should be able to live without it!

  3. Shana Says:

I’d probably start with my office. I have 2 file cabinets full of stuff. Not sure what most of it is, but every time I do look in there, I find something I’ve forgotten–thank you notes for my wedding party, anyone?

The master bedroom is where I would start (and where I intend to do so 4th of July weekend). The poor room has so much stuff in there — the ever growing TBR pile, the scrapbooking table and all the supplies, my boys school papers that I need to weed through to see if I want to keep any of them, the dh’s research stuff for work, etc., etc., etc.

The dh and I go through stages where every few months we clean out something. Our last project was the attic. I can’t believe I kept so much stuff that we will never use again. So I got rid of it. Yep, got rid of the baskets from our wedding of almost 18 years ago. Got rid of those yucky looking concert tshirts from 20 years ago. Got rid of the flower girl dress I wore in my sister’s wedding 28 years ago.

I needed to unclutter my desk. It was covered with various research information, books on other stuff, magazines, day planners and (of course) my junk food (and wrappers).

I’ve already cleaned it and it looks so much better now!

Now I just need to tackle my bookshelves.

Emily, I can so empathize with you. When my daughter was small, she loved playing with her toys and as an only child, she had tons of them! So you can imagine what the house looked like back then.
    lol

Margo,Shana and Buffie….I’m so happy to know I’m not alone.

Haven, Good for you for getting a good start! You’re my inspiration!
