Guest Blogger Emily McKay
Written by RobynDeHart in Jaunty Guests
Robyn here…Before I turn the blog over to Emily I have to step in here to do a special introduction because I’m so excited that Emily is here today. You see not only is she my critique partner and closest friend, but she’s one of my favorite authors. If you like Jenny Cruisie, chances are you’ll like Emily McKay. She’s got great trademark humor and authentic emotion that will really tug at your heartstrings. So if you’ve never given her a try, then do yourself a favor and run out today to get you a copy of her latest Desire - and really how sexy is that cover?
Okay, now without further ado, I give you my partner in crime, Emily McKay.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a health scare. Not the kind of health scare I normally have (which usually consists of me googling obscure diseases and then calling friends and family to see if they think I’m exhibiting signs of … oh, say typhoid or sarcoidosis. No, this was an actual health scare. There were doctors involved and everything.
Don’t worry, it ended up being nothing.
But as I sat in the doctor’s office with my hubby and kids waiting to see if my number was in fact up, here are some of the thoughts that went through my mind: “If I’m dying, I want to do less laundry. I want to eat more Thin Mints and Cherry Garcia ice cream. And I’m definitely not finishing that mediocre book I’ve been reading. Hmm…I wonder what I should read instead. Maybe I’ll reread Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm. Or the last Harry Potter book. I’ll definitely catch up on Suz Brockmann’s Trouble Shooter series.”
It’s funny, now that I think about it. I didn’t give any thought to what I’d finish writing. I guess that’s because I was a reader long before I was a writer. I can imagine never writing again, but I sure can’t imagine never reading again.
So when I found out I wasn’t dying, what did I do when I got home? I folded laundry. But I did pick up a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book I’d been saving.
But what about you? What book is so good, you’d want it to be the last book you ever read?
For any who respond today, I’ll draw a lucky winner to win an autographed copy of my latest release, Baby on the Billionaire’s Doorstep.
P.S. I’m running a contest on my website. Be sure to stop by for a chance to win a one of two $50 gift cards from Amazon.com.

Margo Maguire Says:
Thanks for blogging with us today, Emily - Great questions to ask, even if there’s no health scare!
My favorite books of all time are by Charles Dickens, especially OUR MUTUAL FRIEND. Love that book!
Shana Says:
Thank you so much for blogging with us today, Emily. I’m with you on the Susan Elizabeth Phillip’s books. My last book would probably be one of hers. Maybe NOBODY’S BABY BUT MINE or DREAM A LITTLE DREAM or FIRST LADY… How much time do I have left because I think I’d need to re-read all of SEP’s books!
Joan Woods Says:
There are so many great books out there I don’t know which I would choose for my last book to read.
Crystal B. Says:
For my last book, I would reread The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. I adore that book.
Emily McKay Says:
Oh, I’ve never read Elizabeth Hoyt, but you’re the second person who mentioned her to me lately. I’ll have to add her to my next Amazon order.
As for SEP, I think This Heart of Mine is my all time favorite book. It just hits all the right notes for me.
Karen H in NC Says:
Good post, Emily. Glad to hear you’re not on death’s door!
And you’ve asked a tough question. I don’t know what would be the last book I’d read but I think it would be a toss-up between Margaret Mitchell’s ‘Gone With The Wind’ and ‘Forever Amber’ by Kathleen Winsor. It has been years (would you believe early, very early ’60s) since I read those 2 books.
RobynDeHart Says:
Yeah, I’m so glad you’re here with us today. And you should thank me for not releasing Jaunty on you - no doubt he would have had a heyday had he known you were my CP.
As for my last book…I don’t know that’s a hard pick. I’d want a Suzanne Enoch and Teresa Medieros and Pamela Morsi and Jim Butcher and Suz Brockmann and Stephanie Bond and a new Rebecca Paisley (and she doesn’t even write any more) and I’d probably reread all the Harry Potter books and my list would go on and on.
RobynDeHart Says:
Oh, and another note I have to plug Emily’s book, not cause it’s great (although it is) but because it’s dedicated to me. So go out today to Target or Wal-Mart or your local bookstore and pick up a copy so you can read Emily’s great dedication to me. The book that follows the dedication is equally entertaining, but I’ve been waiting a long time for that dedication.
Fedora Says:
Hi, Emily! So glad to hear that you’re fine! Whew!
Hmm… on my last-book list would be SEP (I haven’t read Natural Born Charmer yet) or Sylvia Day–just started reading her books! And I haven’t read Hoyt’s Serpent Prince yet–I really enjoyed the first two… Or possibly Kleypas’s Devil in Winter. Or one of Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons… or… this isn’t a very easy task, Emily!
And your new book sounds terrific! I’m looking forward to picking it up!
limecello Says:
Hi Emily,
Thanks for visiting! Thank goodness it turned out to be nothing big. Hmmm the last book I’d read? Only one?!?! If I knew my number was coming up, I’d sit at home and read all day. Most of SEP’s backlist, Jennifer Crusie, Jane Austen, Lisa Kleypas, oh the list goes on. Choosing one? I can’t. Maybe maybe maybe I’d end with Kiss and Angel, or Breathing Room by SEP.
Dorothy Says:
Hello Emily. Asking for a last read book is like asking for a favorite book or a favorite movie. You can’t pick just one but I’ll try it this way. TODAY the last book I’d want to read is Lynn Kurland’s ‘When I Fall in Love’. Who could resist a KISS??
Dorothy Says:
Ooops….that should have been KISA!! dern typos! :hissyfit:
Anne Mallory Says:
Thanks for blogging with us, Emily! Glad the health scare turned out to be false. Yikes. Hugs on that!
A last book? Wow. Um… *ducks through the door*
Mary M Says:
For me, it would be Jane Eyre, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
JOYE Says:
Enjoyed the comments. I think the last one I would read would be LaVeryl Spencer’s Twice Loved or Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss
Serenissima Says:
Hi Emily M,
So nice to meet You here.
There are so many books to be read the last time, but after a bit thinking this came to my mind: ANNE OF GREEN GABLES-books/L.M.MONTGOMERY. The whole series is just amazing. I still read it once a year, after 30 years of finding it at my local library.
Laura Says:
I’m usually not one to re-read books because there are so many other books I want to read (but I don’t get rid of books either, which some don’t understand, especially since I don’t re-read) but my favorite book of all time is The Red Hat’s Club Rides Again by Haywood Smith. If I knew my time was up and I wanted to be sure I enjoyed the last book I would ever read, that would head the top of the list. Laughed until I cried and the snort laugh came out and had the “feel good” kind of cry too. I loved that book.
And I’ve read you too Emily McKay. Love your books.
Emily McKay Says:
Ah … so many great books have been mentioned! I’d completely forgotten about Laveryl Spencer and Anne of Green Gables! I just love Morning Glory. And I think I’d definitely have to add some Jane Austen to my list. I like to joke that if someone did Pride and Prejudice with sock puppets I’d still love it.
Virginia H. Says:
For me I guess I would choose Gone With the Wind because it is a nice long book so I would have longer to live!! Hehe! But I might would choose The Leopard Prince, I liked it very well too. It was a great book.
Jane Says:
Hi Emily,
I would choose “The Bride” by Julie Garwood. Any of Julie’s historicals would do nicely.
Stefanie D Says:
Great blog Emily!
I have read so many good books! But one of mu favorites is THE LEOPARD PRINCE by Elizabeth Hoyt. But the kind of books I like to read depends from my mood. I always read romance stories, but sometimes historicals, other times contemporary or paranormal or…
Shana Says:
I like Elizabeth Hoyt as well. I was on a panel with her at the last RT conference, and she was just lovely.
