Ode to my stuff
Written by RobynDeHart in Jaunty PostI suppose I could start singing now something about whiskers on kittens and brown-paper packages, but y’all couldn’t hear me and spontaneously bursting into song happens often enough at my house, but I shall pass. Instead I just want to share with you some of my favorite things.
Y’all know about my obsession with a certain type of red gel pen, but what about my favorite candy? Let me preface this by saying there are plenty of great choices out there. Snickers are super yummy and sometimes a perfect choice. A Twix can hit the spot when you can’t decide between candy or a cookie. And there are plenty others that I like, but when it comes down to it, if there was only one kind of candy in the world, then it would be an easy choice for me.
It really just doesn’t get any better than that.
I love jewelry, really all kinds. I’m kind of like a fish in that regard, any thing that sparkles immediately gets my attention. But I absolutely adore earrings. And my favorites are the lovely dangle-chandelier-type earrings with the lovely stones. I have them in practically every color and different sizes and shapes and they go with anything.
They’re just so pretty and so feminine and they make me happy.
I can almost guarantee that if I turn the TV on during the day - which I don’t do if I’m working - then it goes to one specific station. Channel 231 here and it’s the Food Network. I love it. The Professor even knows the names of most of the hosts, much to his embarrassment (but it’s only fair, I know everyone on CNN), because it’s on so often.
But I love getting new recipe ideas and learning techniques. And it really stretches my creativity for cooking. It’s also perfect background noise if you just need a tiny afternoon nap.
A few years ago my mom gave me a pair of flip-flops. They were ugly, but crazy comfortable. And I wore them all summer and then all the next summer too and it saddened me when the weather turned cold and I had to put my comfy shoes up. So I bought a winter pair. Same brand, only enclosed that I could wear with socks and thus keep my tootsies warm.
My Crocs are purple and they look like Smurf shoes and they just make me smile when I wear them. I know I must look ridiculous, but I simply don’t care.
Since I started writing full-time, nearly 3 years ago, I’ve stopped wearing make-up everyday. But I still love make-up and tend to wear it a few times a week. So it’s important that I have good stuff, especially since I have Rosacea and always have rosy cheeks - I never buy blush. A few years ago I tried some stuff I’d seen on an info-mercial (I know I’ve told y’all before they could sell me a box of dirt in an info-mercial) and I love it.
It’s the mineral based make-up and it’s the only stuff that covers my redness without making me look like I’ve spackled my foundation on. And it doesn’t feel heavy. It’s just great for looking natural.
Sometime in the afternoon, usually between 2 and 3 I get hungry and need a snack. I try to keep healthy snack options in the house, things like raw veggies, fruit, nuts, cheese and whole grain crackers. One of my favorites is Laughing Cow cheese.
Ever tried this stuff? It’s so yummy. And great on all kinds of stuff. It’s good on apples, celery, wasa, pretzels, crackers, your finger, uh…well, that’s just in a pinch if you can’t find anything else.
So how about you? What are some of your favorite things?
And be sure to scroll down and see if you won Sophie Jordan’s contest from yesterday.

Shana Says:
Great blog, Robyn! Some of my favorite things are my ipod. I take it with me EVERYWHERE. I never know when I might need to hear a certain song. I love it. I also like yogurt–strawberry and banana is my favorite. I feel a little nervous if I’m out of yogurt. I also like this sparkling water that Kroger carries. I think it’s called Crystal Clear. It’s all I drink pretty much. I like the lemon/lime flavor. As far as shoes, I like my Converse sneakers–not hightops, just regular black Chuck Taylors.

Ditto on the Ipod, I don’t know HOW I got along without it! For me, the most perfect beverage: Coca Cola, perfectly chilled to the point of ice crystals developing. I just savor that bite from a nice long sip….
Margo Maguire Says:
My favorite thing of the day? My cup of Starbuck’s with a graham cracker, right after my 2-mile walk. It hits the spot!
Taryn Raye Says:
Oh my- favorite snacky food- Funyuns. Don’t know why that sticks with me. Maybe because my mom used to get them only on occasion if they were on sale and me and her and my sister would watch a movie and eat the entire bag together. LOL
My favorite treat- 3 Musketeers…it’s like eating a cloud wrapped in chocolate and it’s usually just what I need when I’m stressed.
Nail polish. I love to get all the bizarre outrageous colors-blues, greens, oranges, reds, pinks, purples and especially if they are irridescent or pearlized.
Perfumes- I’m drawn to certain scents that take me back- Coty’s Wild Musk, Jovan’s White Musk, Cotton Candy, Cherry Vanilla, Frederick’s signature perfume, citrus, esepcially The Healing Garden’s Tangerine one.
My favorite smells though, which I’ve yet to find bottled well- Lilacs or Honeysuckle. I’ve seen some, but they just don’t smell nearly as good as the real thing.
Robyn DeHart Says:
Oh, my iPOD! I can’t believe I forgot that. Hey, I like that fruity water too, Shana, I like the strawberry. And Converse is about all I wore when I was in college, mostly high-tops, but I had them in every color. I’m so glad they’re popular again cause they’re just great shoes.
ladydawgfan Says:
Lemme see . . .
Favorite snacky food - I love roasted red pepper hummus on a good cracker. Yummmm!!
My favorite treat - Swedish Fish - I could eat them by the pound!! Thank God they’re fat-free!!
Favorite beverages are Diet Coke which I drink constantly and my ever present Twinings Earl Grey tea (yes, I’m particular on the brand!).
I can’t wear chemical perfumes due to allergies, so I am grateful to have found a wonderful cream in a health food store that is all natural oils and is chemical and alcohol-free. It has the lightest, most wonderful rose and floral scent which lasts forever, and softens my skin to boot. My one luxury purchase that I don’t ever deny myself.
Taryn Raye, try a health food or natural food store for your lilac or honeysuckle scent. Look in the hair or skin care section and read the labels for natural oils. You may find what you are looking for.
Shirley Karr Says:
I tend to get more excited about finding organic baby food in glass jars (instead of plastic tubs) these days than snacks for myself, though dh and I discovered a weakness for organic dried fruit from the bulk bins at Whole Foods. Whole Paycheck, if we’re not careful. Better than any candy, not too sweet. And our local Albertson’s just started making Boston Creme Pie muffins. Oh, my…
Jane Says:
I love Krispy Kreme donuts, Cold Stone Creamery ice cream, Doritos, Coke, MAC and Lancome makeup and makeup brushes.
Fedora Says:
Favorite things–good chocolate, potato chips, ice cream, Vaseline (yep, I use it on my hands and feet), and summer fruits–all of them!
Angela Says:
I really don’t have a comment about food or even make-up… I just thought I would ask here, if it is okay?..
I have been wondering if there were ever be a fourth book in the women’s detective series.. I want to know the identity of the highwayman and if it is who I think it is..
When do you think the book will be written, or if already published, when does it come out?
I am dying to know.. Thanks for listening.
Mary Says:
I LOVE my Crocs! I started with the flip-flops, went to Scutes, now have Cleos and Adaras. LOVE them.
And my iPod.
And Starbucks.
And Diet Coke with Lime.
