Readers’ Groups & Leap Year Babies

Written by Anne Mallory in Jaunty Post

I went to a really fun readers’ group at the Los Gatos Borders last night. It was my first time attending a readers’ group and I must say that I plan to go again! Everyone frankly discussed books that they had read and made recommendations to the others based on likes and dislikes. It is super interesting to hear other people speak frankly about the books they’ve read. A little like lurking in a messageboard but with the intimacy of actually seeing the people and reading their expressions and body language. Veronica Wolff signed copies of her debut novel Master of the Highlands and we all got to talk books, trends and some off topic craziness. :)

Is anyone part of a readers’ group online or locally? Or are you looking for one?

And, of course, it’s leap year today. Anyone a leap year baby or related to one? Happy Leap Year, you every 4 year wonders!

    Hi Anne,

I am member of several online reader groups and it is fun to chat with people about books. I discovered many new authors that way.

  2. Shana Says:

I’ve been to a few book clubs, but they don’t usually talk about the book they read because most of them don’t read it! How is a book club different than a reader’s group (besides the fact that the group you attended actually read the books!)?

Nope, don’t know any leap year babies, but this is a fun day. It’s a bonus day for us!

  3. Margo Maguire Says:

How do you find a reader’s group? I’ve seen a few online - a couple have asked me to participate when I’ve had books released. Like you said, Anne - they’re interesting!

  4. Fedora Says:

Happy Leap Day! I’m not part of a reader’s group, but I like the idea! Other people who love books–woo!

I’ve never been to a reader’s group or a book club before. And I don’t know any Leap Year babies. Wow, I feel so uninformed. But the groups sounds great, Anne.

  6. Helen Says:

I don’t know any readers groups either but they sound fantastic I love talking about books that I have read and listening to other people views and recomendatons my TBR pile just keeps getting bigger by visiting the blogs I go to not that I mind you can never have too many books to read.
I don’t know any leap year babies either but happy birthday to any.
    Have Fun
    Helen

You know that cat is about the size of my baby Spike.

As for leap year babies… A friend of mine’s husband is a leap year baby. He’s 9 today.

Marcy, the Romance Specialist at my favorite Borders, leads a readers group. They’re avid romance readers who meet once a month, choose which book to read, then discuss it the following month. I’ve really enjoyed the signings I’ve done with them, and the gals are very loyal once they decide they like you. They all attend our Readers’ Luncheon every spring.

Don’t know any leap year babies but a co-worker’s birthday was yesterday. Does close count?

  9. Alice Audrey Says:

I tried to join one locally, but they were always reading stuff that didn’t interest me, and I fell behind.

  10. Rainy Says:

    Happy Leap Year!
I wish I was born on Leap Year. I’d still be a teenager!
In my Vermont library we have a couple of active book clubs (By what you said, Anne, it sounds like in a readers club everyone comes to the club with their own specific books they’ve read to discuss. In a book club, everyone reads and discusses the same book.)
Our librarian picks out books to read during the year. What I like about book clubs is it often gets you to read books you might not have chosen on your own and it gets you out of specific genres you feel comfortable reading. It’s great fun to share your thoughts and hear from others. It’s true that after a while, the discussion will digress from the book, but that can be fun, too….for a little while, anyway.
