What’s at the Movies?
Written by Margo Maguire in Jaunty PostI just saw trailers for the film, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and an interview with Freddie Highmore (the child actor). This movie looks like fun, so I think we’ll probably see it.
The trailers for Fool’s Gold have me cringing. It looks awful (feel free to correct me if you’ve seen it!). I like Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, but I doubt I’ll even bother with it when it comes out on DVD. I’m looking forward to checking out 27 Dresses, Juno, and Michael Clayton. But I think I’d better hurry, because some of those are probably not going to be around for much longer.
What about Meet the Spartans? If you liked The 300, this spoof might resonate with you, although I haven’t seen any trailers. I have a feeling it’ll be a cross between The 300 and Meet the Parents. Whoa!
Cloverfield gave my daughter motion sickness. They used the same kind of camera technique in The Blair Witch Project which means there’s a lot of camera jiggling going on. Plus, the trailers are reminiscent of the old Japanese monster movies. I think I’ll pass.
The Eye looks kind of interesting, but it’s a familiar story, which makes me think it must be a remake of another film. Not that that’s a bad thing … I think it’s got a cool premise: a blind woman has a corneal transplant, which gives her the ability to see something otherworldly. Hmmm… I like spooky films.
But here’s one that might be too creepy even for me. Untraceable. Its premise is that a killer commits murder online, and the more hits his website gets, the faster he kills the victim. Ewww!
I like spooky thrillers, but my husband isn’t really fond of them. So I tend to rent them when he goes out of town Disturbia was my last one. [[shudder]]. These things are even spookier when I’m all alone in the house. What a masochist, eh? But that’s one of my secret pleasures.
What about you? What kind of DVDs do you like to watch when you’re all alone? If you’re not willing to share your secrets :), then what’s on your must-see movie list this winter?

Shana Says:
I’d like to see The Kite Runner. I think it’s out of theaters, so I’ll probably have to rent it. I’m also interested in a foreign film. I think it’s called 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days. It’s controversial and hasn’t opened here yet.
Not much else looks too good right now.

Hi Margo! Actually, The Eye is a remake of a Japanese film (like the Grudge). My sister said she saw the Japanese version and it was pretty freaky…
I’m looking forward to seeing “The Other Boleyn Girl” in theatres. My husband has no desire to see it so once again we will probably be seeing separate movies. As for DVD, I’m looking forward to seeing Juno, but I want to pick up “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”.
Taryn Raye Says:
I’m looking forward to seeing Becoming Jane and The Jane Austen Book Club. I also would like to see 27 Dresses and I might risk the Fool’s Gold, though the scene where she hits him with the golf club(or whatever it is) makes me cringe every time. We’ll definitely check out The Spiderwick Chronicles too.
I cringe at the thought of Meet the Spartans. Parodies can be good but I’ve seen enough Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie to hold me for a long time to come! LOL Sometimes they take the jokes a bit too far and rather than being funny it becomes lewd and vulgar.
As for what I watch alone- most of my old favorites that don’t interest my husband- Sandra Dee movies, Little Women, all the ones based on Jane Austen Novels, Fried Green Tomatoes, Beaches, Steel Magnolias, Susan Slade. The list could go on and on. LOL
Dorothy Says:
I’d like to see ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ and might even get to see it this weekend, if I’m lucky. I haven’t seen ‘Atonement’ yet but want to and also ‘27 Dresses’. I know that there are more, I just can’t think of them at the moment.
And it’s never to early to start looking forward to the next Harry Potter movie.
I’m such a wimp when it comes to scary movies. I don’t watch them, period. When alone, I watch what ever hits me at the time. I’ve been known to turn on ‘Finding Nemo’ and watch that or a myriad of other movies. I love the classic movies. My son and I went and saw ‘A Night at the Opera’ with the Marx Brothers last night at a local theatre. It was great!
Robyn DeHart Says:
Every once in a while I can convince The Professor to take me to a “scary” movie so we recently saw Untraceable which I totally loved. It’s a bit heavy on the violence/torture, but it was really well done. I’d put it in a category closer to Seven than Silence of the Lambs, if that helps.
I’m looking forward to Nim’s Island and 88 Weeks (another spooky movie.)
Maureen Says:
Hi Margo!
I hardly ever go to the movies but my daughter and I went to see 27 dresses and it was really good. My husband and son were home watching pre-game shows since it was football playoffs at the time and I can say that neither of them would have liked the movie at all. In fact, there were only women in the movie theater.
