I don’t keep very good track of Hollywood and its stars. And I readily admit to being baffled by America’s obsession with personalities like Britney and Paris. Ye Gods, don’t we have anything better to do?
But onward … Did you see the list of Oscar nominations for best picture? I’ll put it here, in case you haven’t:
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
I think this is the first time in my adult life that I haven’t seen any of the nominated movies. And most of them I don’t want to see. No Country for Old Men? Why would I want to watch some horrible, sadistic, relentless killer (even if it’s a new take on the old good vs evil theme) going after his victims? And in that hot, dry setting? Yeeech. Several of my friends have seen it and say it’s really great. But I’m not into that kind of violence, even if it is art.

Nothing about There Will Be Blood draws me. I’m quite sure Daniel Day Lewis gives a spectacular performance, but hey … Stories of corruption and deception? I am SO not there!

I might be persuaded to see Atonement, but only because it isn’t a “guy” movie with dirt, heat, sand and killings. But the storyline bothers me. Can there be a good resolution to it? Will I leave the theater happy and satisfied?

Michael Clayton looks compelling. I wouldn’t object to watching George Clooney for a couple of hours, and I think the question of good and evil, right and wrong, morality vs immorality can be done in this kind of movie, without a lot of horrific screen violence.

I do plan to see Juno. I’ve heard it’s really smart with sharp dialogue and excellent characters. My 20 year-old son said it sucks, which I take to be an excellent recommendation!

OK, I guess I’m a wuss. I want to feel good when I leave the theater. I want to have experienced excitement, romance, some conflict and a resolution. I don’t think it’s too much to ask.
But enough about me.
Have you seen any of these? Do you plan to?

I haven’t seen any of these movies! And since my husband is like taming a wild bear when asked to go to see a movie…I’ll wait for netflix. Even then I only wish to see Juno.
I’ve heard rumors that Atonement doesn’t lead to a HEA. So I’m not real sure about that. It’d be kinda like watching The Family Stone or The Break-Up.
And don’t hurt me, but I’m not really into George. He’s a great actor and all, but *sigh*, I can wait until it’s out on dvd.

For the past few years I’ve looked at the Oscar nominations and haven’t seen any of the movies. I’m with you, Margo. I don’t want to see these films. Whatever happened to the days when Titanic was nominated–not that that’s great filmmaking, but at least people saw it!

I’ve seen Michael Clayton and it’s good. A little slow in places, but well done. I wouldn’t put it in the best movie category, but I think the pickings were slim this year. And of course the academy ignored wonderful movies like August Rush and Stardust and Martian Child.
I would really love to see Juno, but have been told by a close friend that while it’s wonderful the subject matter would be a bit too close for me right now since our two failed adoptions this past summer. So we’re saving it for another time on Netflix.
As for Atonement, The Professor wants to see it and I told him go ahead. There’s no way that movie has a happy ending. I’m sure he gets killed in the way right when it’s finally okay for them to be together. That’s the way those sorts of love stories go. And as much as I hated PS I Love You I’m pretty sure this one would be worse so it’s not on my list.
I hate the Coen brothers so I’m not planning to see No Country and frankly I’ve never even heard of the other one nor seen it in any theaters around us.
I guess I’m pretty low class when it comes to movies. We saw Mad Money this past weekend and I thought it was adorable. Granted in the past I’ve certainly enjoyed my share of nominees/winners I love Crash and thought the Departed was brilliant, but on the whole I’m a big budget kind of gal.

Yeah, it suprises me how they come up with these nominations. Do they go around asking people if they have NOT seen a movie and then nominate it? I’ve been wanting to see “Atonement” but wonder if it’ll end like “Cold Mountain”. Then I’ll wait for DVD because I hate crying in the theater. Most of these movies actually look like the “wait for the DVD” type for me.

I’ve not seen any of the nominees either. I really want to see ATONEMENT and will probably watch JUNO when it’s on DVD.

This reminds me when ‘Amadeus’ won the Best Picture Oscar. I’d never heard of it and found out later that it had had only a limited release when it had won the Best Picture Oscar. I just don’t get it! I guess I’m just not artsy enough.

I was suppose to see the George Clayton movie but somehow I got mixed up on the times and now I can’t even remember what I watched instead but it was none of the above. I rarely agree with the outcomes. I’m still mad ET didn’t win lol.
