When Writer’s Strike
Written by Jenna Petersen in Jaunty PostProbably most of you are aware that right now the writer’s in the WGA are on strike. Let me preface all of this by saying that I am 100% behind the writers. The sticking point in negotiation is that the studios don’t want to pay the writers a percentage of the billions (BILLIONS) of dollars they make off of streaming shows via the internet. Yeah. That’s right. They want to put content writers have written online, make money off advertising… and then not pay them. Nice, huh? So go Writers! Go WGA!
However, this strike does put a crimp on my television watching. I mean, I have “my shows”!! The Office (PB&J anyone), CSI, Battlestar Galactica (which is not back yet, but I’m scared!!), etc. Of course, you all know about my sick obsession with reality television, but I have limits. And now it’s all I’m left with… for the foreseeable future. So here’s what I’m watching or plan to watch as I hope the studios get their acts together.
Rock of Love 2 with Bret Michaels – Help! I watched the first Rock of Love with the Poison frontman and now I can’t help but watch the strippers battle it out for Bret’s heart again. It’s just WRONG, but it’s so right!!!
Paranormal State – This one is on A&E and follows the paranormal phenomenon investigation group from Penn State. It’s really cheesy, but also tooootally creepy.
Intervention — Another A&E show, but it’s actually really moving. Follows addicts as their families prepare to participate in a secret intervention. Makes me cry and thank my lucky stars that I made good choices.
Survivor — The classic show comes back in February. I can’t help it. I still love watching the rats and the snakes battle it out.
Amazing Race – This one takes couples of all kinds around the world, doing tasks and testing their relationships. It’s over for this season, but I was rooting for TK and Rachel, the super chill, clearly supportive “recently dating” couple. Also, they were kind of hippies. Hippies are fun.
Celebrity Rehab – Anything on VH1 Celebreality you know is going to be BAD! And yet, I can’t look away from the trainwreck. Help.
So what shows do you desperately miss during the writer’s strike? And what reality and news shows are you tragically watching instead?

Robyn DeHart Says:
So far we’re missing the new shows Chuck and Life and The Professor is missing The Big Bang Theory. Now if they take off Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds I’ll start to get all twitchy. I mentioned this week already by obsession with The Biggest Loser which is currently taking the place of American Idol for me. But I’d already decided I wasn’t going to watch that this year until they got to Hollywood - I’m tired of watching those sad people embarrass themselves. The Professor likes the Amazing Race. And we both like Survivor. Other than that we’re not really big reality TV fans.
There’s a new show coming up though that I’m interested in. Eli Stone - I’m mostly intrigued because I just lost Jonny Lee Miller.
Jenna Petersen Says:
One correction. When I wrote this, I thought Amazing Race would be over after Sunday. It’s not over and TK and Rachel are still in it!! YAY!!! And my least favorite couple, Nate and Jen, are GONE!!! YAYAYAYAYAY!!!
Go TK and Rachel!! Go hippies!!
Haven Rich Says:
Grey’s Anatomy is in reruns and has a new episode like every two weeks. Uggg!
ladydawgfan Says:
Ya had me scared there for a minute, Jenna. I thought that I had missed the finale of Amazing Race!! WHEW!!!! And yeah, GO TK and Rachel!!!
My mother and I are also missing both Big Bang Theory which is absolutely hilarious and Heroes, which, of course, has been interrupted mid-season yet again. And they expect us to just pick up and follow where they left off and actually care about what is happening???
Linda Says:
Only one of my shows has currently bit the dust for this season, Gossip Girl. I’m going to go into full out craziness when Smallville, Supernatural and, Moonlight are out of new episodes.
Thankfully, One Tree Hill just started its new season. And, Jericho is starting in February.
Shana Says:
I don’t have any “shows.” I’m usually writing or reading when primetime TV is on. USF likes The Biggest Loser and some of the game shows, like Deal or No Deal, The Power of 10, and the mob one. There’s really just sports on our TV most of the time.
Jenna Petersen Says:
That is the hard thing ladydawgfan. Even Jenna Fischer (who plays Pam on The Office) said that she’s been waiting forever for Jim and Pam to get together and now SHE has to wait to see what happens.
And yay for midseason replacements.
Clarisse Says:
I don’t have a large number of shows (CSI (original), Bones and House)but what I did was increase my Netflicks subscription from one at a time to two at a time.
Screwball comedies and period historical movies will get me through this.
Haven Rich Says:
I’m with you Clarisse! Plus Netflix just changed their view online limits to unlimited. I watch a lot online :D.
