Sick Kitty

Roxie

My kitty is sick. She’s been sick for about 2 weeks now. She stopped eating for some reason and then developed fatty liver disease. I guess what happens when a cat stops eating is their metabolism gets messed up and then the liver doesn’t work right. We took her to the vet and came home with a bunch of pills to give her and a high-calorie food we have to force feed her.

Let me tell you, I am not her favorite person right now. I’m sure all this will be worth it when she gets well, but it sure is frustrating in the meantime.

There’s no point to this blog. I just wanted to vent. Hey, if there’s anything you want to vent about, go right ahead.

Giving meds to cats has to be the worst! I can give my dogs anything (the big dummies!) but my kitties … no way. Except now I’m giving them something to help with all our allergies. It’s called ace drops – and since it’s in liquid form, I just put a drop on their canned food that they get once a day as treats, and they scarf it down. Now we just have to see if it helps with the allergic symptoms.

Sorry you’re kitty is sick, Shana. There’s nothing worse than knowing they’re hurt and having to do something to help them that they don’t like. It’s those times that I wish they understood English.

Margo, in the last years of her life, our kitty Little Grey was allergic to herself. Yup. Herself. Which was kind of funny, actually.

I hope your kitty is feeling soon. Maybe something is going on with her thyroid.

So sorry your kitty is sick. Dogs definitely are easier when it comes to medication. I too have a sick kitty but I’m afraid hers is related to old age (17) and we take it day by day.

Thank you everyone for your sweet comments. I didn’t think anyone checked the blog on Sundays! I especially appreciate the comments because Roxie took a bad turn last night and we were up with her for most of it. She seems a little better today. You’re right, catslady, it’s a day by day thing.

We went through something similar this spring with Dakarai — it was so painful I don’t think I was able to blog about it. I had to give him a shot three times a week and pills twice a day, and his chances were pretty slim. But his body seems to have adapted and he’s still with us, and in fact helped Derby knock down the Christmas tree this morning.

Don’t give up on her, Shane, it does get easier. Until they get better, and then it’s even harder to pill them.

Hi Shana, so sorry to hear about your cat. I have had experience with this same disease and it is tough. Hope your cat pulls through. The force feeding is hard, but if it works she should pull through, it’s just a long road.

Kathryn, it’s so nicne to hear from someone who’s been through this, too. I hope your kitty recovered fully. Mine seems better today. She doesn’t hate me…yet.

Unfortunately, Pippin had to be euthanized after 3 months of struggling with the jaundice and lack of appetite caused by this syndrome. He was a beautiful, 3 year old Maine Coon cat. He became so weak he developed a huge abcess and we decided, based on quality of life, that his time had come. It was very hard and he is much missed. It was a decision supported by my wonderful vet as poor Pip was just getting weaker and sicker. We decided against the implanted feeding tube and he just could not keep anything down.

Oh, Kathryn, I’m so sorry about Pippin. You made the right decision. I can see how a cat would suffer a lot from this.

Roxie is doing better these last few days. We got her some more Vetalog (Pepcid AC) to help with her nausea. She doesn’t have jaundice, so that’s a plus. I just keep praying she will eat more on her own.

Good luck. Glad to hear she is improving. At least she is eating on her own as Pippin did not. It was a messy fight several times a day trying to force feed him.
