My Own “Let’s Get Better Acquainted” Poll

Written by Cindy Kirk in Jaunty Post

In the book “Fuzzy Red Bathrobe” there are a series of questions that help women get better acquainted. So, I’m going to ask them….then I’ll give my answers and I hope you’ll give yours….and we’ll all get better acquainted.

In the section:

Ancestors and Family
What physical characteristics do I feel I have inherited from my mother and grandmothers?

None. While my brother looked just like my mother and her family, I don’t have any characteristics from that side of the family.

Bodies and Health
If I know I’m going to be in the house all day, do I still do a full makeup?

Yes, I do. I don’t know why. I could stay in my thermal nightwear all day, but I have to shower and put on make-up.

Birth and Child-rearing
What are my feelings about children having pets?

This is an easy one for me. I think having a pet teaches a child so much and also provide that unconditional love that every child needs.

Fun
What game do I remember playing as a child?

We had a board game called the “Barbie game” and I can remember being sprawled on the floor with my parents (yes, my dad played, too) having great fun with this game!

Food
What food did my mother prepare that I liked?

My mother made the best Runza’s (everyone knows what those are, right?) and apple dumplings. She was a great cook, but her talent skipped right over me.

Okay, I’ve bared my soul….now it’s your turn.

    Ancestors and Family
What physical characteristics do I feel I have inherited from my mother and grandmothers?

I’ve been told I look a lot like both my parents, but I think I get my height from my mom’s side though- my great grandmother was only 4′11″. I’m 5′4″ now, but for a long time I was the same height as my GG. Everyone always said it was the Dutch side. My grandmother said I got my chest from her, that she “bloomed out” overnight. I got my mom’s red/auburn hair.

    Bodies and Health
If I know I’m going to be in the house all day, do I still do a full makeup?

Not always, but sometimes. Just depends on how busy my day is with housework. If I’m dusting and cleaning I figure there’s not point because I’ll have to shower once I’m done anyway. LOL

    Birth and Child-rearing
What are my feelings about children having pets?

I think it’s a good lesson in responsibility, though at this point we just have a “family” pet. The kids have offered to help feed Mizzy numerous times or get her fresh water, but at this point they both tend to make a mess I have to clean up. haha!

    Fun
What game do I remember playing as a child?

Oh, there’s a lot- Monopoly, Aggravation, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Dominos. Those were some of the best time, sitting around the kitchen table.

    Food
What food did my mother prepare that I liked?

meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans and homemade biscuits.

  2. Margo Maguire Says:

Physical Characteristics? I’m a double for my maternal grandmother. And I think I have her sense of humor, too.

Make-up? Since I hardly wear it on my best days, I’m not likely to wear it when I’m planning on staying home

Kids and pets … My kids have had more than enough pets over the years. I’m ready for a break. My next pet (after all my current ones are gone) will be a little non-shedding dog that will fit in my purse and not need a 5-mile walk just to get the “willies” out.

Games. We played “Slap.” It’s a card game and it can either become hysterically funny, or deterioriate into major fights.

Food. My mom wasn’t a major cook, but she sure knew how to do pork chops. I learned to make pie from my grandmother - and everyone always raves about my crusts, so I guess she did ‘em right!

  3. Cindy Kirk Says:

    Taryn,

I’m half Dutch….so we have that in common! And Mizzy is the cutest name for a pet.

    Margo,

Your comment about pets made me smile. Don’t you have…several…big dogs??

  4. Haven Rich Says:

    Ancestors and Family
What physical characteristics do I feel I have inherited from my mother and grandmothers?

We all the women in our family have this “bum”. It’s not a good one, I promise, but it’s the one thing we can count on. Very annoying!

    Bodies and Health
If I know I’m going to be in the house all day, do I still do a full makeup?

Not a chance! I rarely wear it, so it’s often a special event or going out for a really nice fun night.

    Birth and Child-rearing
What are my feelings about children having pets?

I agree with you here Cindy. Having a pet teaches the child to connect with something else and responsibility.

    Fun
What game do I remember playing as a child?

Hide and Seek. Ok, if you want an actual game, then I’d say Uno.

    Food
What food did my mother prepare that I liked?

My mom is a wonderful cook, in all areas but it was always her deserts that had me drooling. Dirt cake anyone? It is seriously good lol.

  5. Jennifer Y. Says:

    Ancestors and Family
What physical characteristics do I feel I have inherited from my mother and grandmothers?

My height…I am short like them…LOL.

    Bodies and Health
If I know I’m going to be in the house all day, do I still do a full makeup?

    Nope…I don’t really wear makeup.

    Birth and Child-rearing
What are my feelings about children having pets?

I have mixed feelings on this one…it does teach them unconditional love and about responsibility…but I also think it depends on the child’s age, the type of pet and whether or not the parent is willing to share the responsibility until the child able to do everything on their own. I don’t have kids so this has never been an issue for me.

    Fun
What game do I remember playing as a child?

I had the Babysitter’s Club board game as well as the Sweet Valley High board game that I loved. I was also a fan of Connect Four, Guess Who?, and Pictionary. I could never get anyone to play games with me though…LOL

    Food
What food did my mother prepare that I liked?

I am a picky eater, but I loved my mom’s dressing, gravy, and homemade mashed potatoes.

  6. ladydawgfan Says:

    Physical Characteristics:
I have my mother’s height, my maternal family curly hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. I have my father’s nose.

    Bodies and Health
If I know I’m going to be in the house all day, do I still do a full makeup?

I can’t wear makeup because of the alcohol content in most brands so the point if moot. However, I do shower and dress.

    Kids and Pets:
I had a cat from the time I was 4 until she passed away when I was in my early 20’s. She was my crying shoulder, my nursemaid when I was sick, and my silent companion when I read in bed. A pet can be a Godsend for a lonely child.

What Games do I remember playing as a child?

Lemme see . . . Duck, Duck, Goose. Kick the Can. Monopoly. Parchisi. Sorry. Clue. Checkers. Chinese Checkers. Statue. Red Light, Green Light. Ghost in the Graveyard. Lots of kids in our neighborhood and a different era, so it was actually safe to be outdoors at dusk and shortly after.

    Food:
I liked (out of necessity) everything that my mother prepared. She had a saying - “You have two choices for dinner - take it or leave it!” We weren’t allowed to be picky eaters since there were seven mouths to be fed on what my father brought home.

  7. Cindy Kirk Says:

I love what I’m finding out about all of you and discovering the similarities.

    Like…

ladydawgfan– I played “kick the can” as a child

Jennifer–I love homemade mashed potatoes, too!!

Haven–Thanks for bringing up Uno and Dirt Cake (really, it is delicious)

  8. Shana Says:

    Physical Characterisitics
I look more like my dad’s side of the family. i think I have my mother’s forehead.

    Bodies and Health
I don’t put on makeup unless I’m going to work.

    Children and Pets
It’s fine as long as the parent realizes the pet is ultimately their responsibility. if the child tires of Fluffy, you don’t give him or her away.

    Childhood Games
War with the kids in the neighborhood, barbies, Monopoly, checkers

    Mom’s Food
I liked my mom’s eggplant parmesan

  9. Cindy Kirk Says:

    Shana,

I agree with you totally on the pet issue…even when the child gets tired of the pet, you don’t give it away!!

  10. Shirley Karr Says:

I have my mom’s knock knees but luckily not her thin hair. Dry skin and blue eyes from my dad.

Pre-baby, I used to wear a bit of eyeliner  and lipstick for special occasions but now it’s mainly just tinted lip balm.

I *love* having pets, as a kid and adult. My dog - a Westie I picked out for my 8th birthday - slept under my mom’s bed, but Mom’s Pekingese and my little bother’s Westie slept on my bed. *In* the bed, if they got the chance.

Daniel, our 4-mo-old, already sort of has a pet. Dakarai, our Himalayan, likes to lay on the changing table and seems to enjoy being kicked during diaper changes. Yes, he’s been peed on, but he still doesn’t get down when the diaper comes off. Derby likes it up there too, but he usually jumps down. Dakarai also likes to groom Daniel, espically when the baby’s crying.

We used to play a card game called Pit, and my dad taught me a few games like Casino to help learn math skills. While the adults were upstairs on New Year’s Eve, the kids would play Monopoly in the basement. In the most memorable game of Kick the Can, I accidentally caught the can with my face and had a spectacular nosebleed. We also played a lot of Go Fish and Crazy Eights.

Mom’s special dish was goulash. Desserts were Grandma’s forte. Mississippi Mud, anyone?

    What’s a Runza?

  11. brownone Says:

I have my mom’s body shape, only I’m taller so I don’t look SO round.

As for makeup..I’ve got three kids running around my house..WHO HAS TIME FOR MAKEUP!??!! Actually, the only time I get all dolled up is if we are going out to a party or get together. It never fails to amaze people how well I clean up!

As for pets…I refuse to get a dog or cat. We have had a turtle and two fish for the past three years and I’ve become the mother of five instead of three. Nuff said. At least those are small poopies, I don’t think I can handle having to clean dog and cat poopies too!

My all time favorite game was Hungry Hungry Hippoes as a child. My sister and I had some really intense fighting matches over who cheated by tilting the board so the marble would go into thier hippo’s mouth.

As for food, my mom makes pepper pot and fresh baked bread every Christmas morning. She’s done it since we were little girls. The smell of the lamb and spices boiling on the stove along with the yeast from the bread rising made the house smell like Christmas!

  12. Cindy Kirk Says:

    Shirley,

Runzas are homemade dough with hamburger, cabbage and spices inside…then baked. They’re fabulous.

So funny about Dakarai and Daniel…sounds like they’re good friends already :)

    Brownone,

Thanks for mentioning Hungry Hungry Hippos You brought back some great memories.

And, in terms of holiday smells, it still amazes me how they have the power to transport us back.
