Those of you who are regular visitors to the JQ’s blog may have noticed that I’ve been a bit scarce around here of late. Fear not. My absence hasn’t been for naught. Armed with a flashlight and aided by my intrepid (Snicker) porcupine sidekick, I have spent the past several days scouting out some of the most well known haunted locations in my area for your consideration. Yes, it’s time once again for Kim’s annual Halloween tour of haunted places! Are these spots actually occupied by the restless spirits of those who have passed on, or can it all be chalked up to imagination? You be the judge…
Our first stop is the Willard Library in Evansville, Indiana. More than 110 years old, this Victorian Gothic structure is the oldest public library in Indiana and the home of the Gray Lady ghost. (It has also played host to the cast and crew of one of my favorite shows, The Sci-Fi Channel’s Ghost Hunters). Stories of the strange happenings that take place here have been circulating for years. Books allegedly fly off shelves, strange footsteps and whispers are heard at night, and weird shadows walk among the stacks. You can visit this website for info on the haunting and see actual pictures taken with the building’s “ghost cam.” Now, if I can just get that darn porcupine to quit sneaking off into a corner to read romance novels, we might actually get around to investigating…
We venture a bit further afield for our next stop, the Hannah House in Indianapolis, Indiana. Built in 1858, this historic home is said to house several different ghosts, though no one seems to be able to agree on exactly who these spirits once were. Here, apparitions have been sighted, objects move about, and unpleasant odors pervade the rooms. Having visited the home once back in the 1980′s on a weekend trip to Indy with the family, I can attest to feeling a bit uncomfortable there, though I never experienced any of the above phenomena. And that was before I had ever heard the tales of the spectral residents. Fact or fiction? Check out this website and decide for yourself.
Our last stop on the tour is the supposedly haunted Colgate Palmolive Factory in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Once the home of the southern branch of the Indiana State prison system, workers here have seen strange lights, heard men’s voices whispering, and seen doors open and close by themselves. And what is that? Just up ahead, I think I see a strange shadow. (At this point, Jaunty runs off screaming and the investigation breaks down. Have you ever heard a porcupine scream? Very disturbing.)
So, do you have any local haunted places to tell us about or a paranormal experience of your own to relate? Or are you an avowed skeptic? Please feel free to share. It’s that time of year for a spooky tale.

Ghost Hunters will actually be at Waverly Hills Sanitorium in Louisville, Ky on Halloween. I saw the episode when they went once before and I’m thrilled they’re coming back to Ky for this Halloween’s special live episode.
I haven’t been to Waverly Hills, but I do live in Kentucky, so that is exciting to me.
I’ve had a few experiences, not necessarily seeing anything, but I’ve had feelings and sensed things that others don’t.
When I talk about my grandfather on my mom’s side(who’s been gone since 1991), a moth generally appears and flies around me, hovering, landing on me, even when I haven’t seen moths in my house in weeks or months. I usually only see them when I’ve been thinking or talking about my memories of my grandpa or how much I miss him. I always just say hello and am overcome with a feeling of comfort.
I would talk about some other things, but it would take up too much room on a comment! LOL

I once lived in a house haunted by a woman in a paisley dress. She wasn’t the scary or interactive variety of spook, just kind of… there. I still think she was buried under an addition to the house, but being 11, no one took me seriously, much less seriously enough to demolish part of the house. It came out years later that my mom had also seen her, but she didn’t want to get painted with the “crazy” brush too, so she kept quiet about it…

Bannack, MT is a ghost town about 5 hours from my house. My niece and I love to go “ghost hunting” and this is a must-see. The first time we went there, one of the houses absolutely gave us the heeby-jeebies. We would not go in it. We later found out it was the “baby” house, where there was an epidemic and a lot of babies and children had died in that house. Then, there’s also the Meade Hotel. That place just gave me the creeps.

Well, there’s the railroad tracks in San Antonio that was the site of a bus accident that killed several children. Legend is, if you put your car on neutral on the tracks that you’ll roll across. People even say that if you sprinkle the back of your car with baby powder that afterwards you can see children’s hand prints in the powder. I never went. Spooks me out just thinking about it. But that spot and story was on the Travel channel once for some ghost related program.

No haunted houses in my part of Idaho but I HAVE heard a porcupine scream. They are incredibly vocal animals and their screams sound very much like a woman screaming. Really disturbing on a dark night.

Robyn, I think I remember seeing the show that profiled that story before, though I’m blank on exactly which show it was. I’m a big fan of America’s Most Haunted Places, etc., so whenever something like that comes on, I’m glued to the screen.
Wow, Kerry! And seeing the lady never scared you? I have a great deal of interest in the paranormal, but if I ever actually saw a ghost, I would probably behave much like Jaunty and run away screaming, LOL
Taryn, I live just across the river from Louisville and grew up hearing tales about Waverly. In fact, I did a short profile on it last year for my Haunted Tours blog. Just looking at the building from the outside is enough to give me the creeps. It just looks “haunted,” if you know what I mean. I hadn’t heard that the Ghost Hunters were doing their live show there this year. That’s awesome! Maybe I should drag Jaunty along and pay a little visit…
