Doing strange things
Written by Anne Mallory in Jaunty PostHave you ever done anything kinda crazy? Not talking bonkers crazy (though that is also fair game), but maybe like the 86 grade gasoline brand of crazy? What would you call that - economy crazy? Crazy-lite?
We saw 70 shooting stars Sunday night, the high point of the meteor shower, and so we decided, hey, pre-dawn hours are supposed to be the best…let’s wake up at 4am and see how many we can see then!!! So we did. And we saw another 100. Very awesome. But maybe just a little weird…

I think that’s actually pretty cool. If you had to get up and be at work at 8, now that would definitely be crazy. My crazy things tend to be with exercise. I don’t like to miss a run, so I will run in the pouring rain, in the freezing cold, in the rain and cold…I know people driving by think I’m crazy, and sometimes I do, too.
J Perry Stone Says:
I don’t think that’s crazy, Anne; I think that’s totally cool. You took advantage of the fireworks display nature had to offer. YOU GO!!
I once went skinny dipping at 5 AM in a MN lake where we were camping.
I wanted to do it alone and it was gorgeous: mist rising off the suface of a glass-calm lake, eveything asleep … or so I thought.
Anyway, about half way to a little island, I had a moment of panic when a loon dove down and surfaced to bob about 2 feet away from me.
Loons are huge and beautiful and very solitary so it was a surprise he came so close. That part was life-changing, but when he dove back down again, all I could think about was that I was NAKED.
It’s very difficult to tread water with your knees together.

Lordy..my family wrote the “book” on crazy! We’ll break into song really loudly in the car (at times it the Macarena, which requires the arm movements) and people driving by must wonder if we’re headed for the loony bin! Other crazy things we do: play in the rain (grown up thirty year olds), dance to music videos to embarass the kids, go out in public talking the “jive stuff man…far out…groovy…out of site!” and sometimes we’ll put on an Indian accent and tell each other to shut up, which ends up sounding like “sh*t up”. Yeah..we’re pretty nuts!
Jenna Petersen Says:
Sometimes El Guapo and I decide to stay up all night and go to IHOP at 3am for pancakes. That’s always fun. I’m also thinking of getting another tattoo, which I know some people consider crazy, though it’s more mainstream now.
J Perry Stone Says:
what’s your first tattoo, Jenna (or is it a private thing)?
J Perry Stone Says:
Brownone,
That’s hilarious, especially the Indian accent and embarrassing the kids part.
After all that, i just have one thing to say to you:
Love your guts.
brownone Says:
J Perry….we’re looking for a therpist with a “family discount”.
My kids will need it….you should see when I go out in public and do my, “Yo man…that is so phat! We are chillin in Publix buying some chickin’ that’s finger lickin’.” Poor kids…they’re really gonna need therapy!
Oh..and Jenna…getting a tatoo is not crazy, its BRAVE! I’m so much of a chicken I don’t know how the heck I managed to have three kids!
Anne Mallory Says:
Shana, I’m one of those people who thinks you are a little crazy to do that, but I completely ADMIRE that you do it! Very cool.
Thanks, JPerry! Your description is beautiful! What a wonderful experience. And a loon! I love loons! We have two on our lake, and you are right, they are big birds. Would scare the willies out of me if one popped up like that. And LOL at the peeping loony!!
They do seem more perceptive than the usual bird, so I can understand your state!
Anne Mallory Says:
Brownone, your family sounds awesome!!!
Jenna, yes! Exactly! 3am pancakes, I’m so with you.
Jenna Petersen Says:
My first tattoo I got after I sold my first book (a novella to Red Sage). It’s an egyptian ankh wound with a rose. The novella was set in Egypt. It’s on my right shoulderblade.
Haven Rich Says:
Man! I so forgot about that going on this past weekend.
The craziest thing I’ve done is: get married after knowing the guy for 1.5 months.
As for getting up early to watch stars crazy…I’d have to say basically what Jenna said. Sometimes the hubby and I decide to stay up all night and end up heading to IHOP or Waffle House for food. BTW, we always enjoy shopping at Walgreens in the very early AM hours (think from midnight til 4am lol).
Anne Mallory Says:
Very cool about your tattoo, Jenna!
Haven, I snorted my water. You shop at Walgreens from midnight to 4am? LOL! At least you are giving that clerk something to do!
That marriage thing seems to be working, so I’d say that it wasn’t so crazy in hindsight!
Haven Rich Says:
Oh nooo, not the entire time haha. How funny.
Those are the hours we go between. It’s very peaceful, typically no one there, the shelves are full. Yup, it’s nice. We started that when we lived in San Diego, the wal-marts there don’t stay open 24 hours, but Walgreens does. So we’d go there to buy those odd-ball cravings that only a person who’s been up for 24 hours straight watching a Buffy marathon could have.
Anne Mallory Says:
Ah, the Buffy marathon cravings.
It would be hilarious though if you had a ritual of browsing the shelves from 12am to 4. Drive the clerk batty, lol.
Haven Rich Says:
Make them think we’re casing the joint lol. As it was, we had one follow us around one time. We do tend to walk around for at least an hour or two lol.
