Concerts

Written by Shana in Jaunty Post

Recently, Ultimate Sportsfan and I were talking about concerts we’d been to, and I realized that I have been to quite a few and some that might now be considered classics. I saw some bands at the height of their fame: REO Speedwagon, Heart, Debbie Gibson (ugh!–my little sister dragged me to that one), Depeche Mode, Erasure, George Michael, Madonna, OMD, Nine Inch Nails, The Violent Femmes, Whitesnake (a date took me to this one–not my choice), Huey Lewis and the News, and Morrissey.

But there’s one concert I had to miss, and I can’t tell you how upset I was. I was upset for years. I might still be upset.

I couldn’t go to see Wham!

I was in 7th grade when Wham hit it big with “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” and though my dad might go with me to REO Speedwagon or Huey Lewis, he was not going to see Wham!

Wham!

I had to stay home.

So what about you? Any great concerts? Any you wish you had been able to go to? Have I totally dated myself now?

I loved WHAM! For years I was in love with a boy who patterned himself after George Michael (when we still thought George was hetero … pshya), but I never did get to go to a concert.

I’ve been hauled to quite a few: Sting, Psychedelic Furs, Howard Jones, 10,000 maniacs—and while they all sound slightly John Hughes filmsish, what I really loved, and never got to go to, was PRINCE. Funky purple-wearing and talking about things we’d never tell our parents Prince.

My most memorable concert, however, was a Lilith Fair concert. Granolas were all around me and one granola was breast feeding her FIVE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. Now I’m a big proponent of breast feeding, if one can, but not to that degree. The kid was a big as me.

Um, wow! J Perry. That’s an image I wasn’t ready for this early in the morning. What was a 5-year-old doing at a concert anyway?

I’m impressed, though. You ladies have been to some great concerts!

Shana said: What was a 5-year-old doing at a concert anyway?

EXACTLY. But I think the mom was trying to include girl in the “power of women” feel of the concert. Either that or she was afraid the kid would miss a feeding?????

  5. Pat L. Says:

    I loved seeing in concert:
Paul Anka (recently), Chicago and Kenny Rogers a few years ago.

I would love someday to see Cher, Celion, Rod Stewart. I saw a Rod Stewart Tribute last week and it was awesome.

This past Feb. I saw Dancing With the Stars Tour - it was wonderful.

  6. Jenna Petersen Says:

New Kids on the Block was my first concert. So sad.

Then Bryan Adams for his Waking Up the Neighbors tour. And later the Eagles for their Hell Freezes Over tour. I really need to go to more concerts since we get a lot of great acts near Chicago.

My first concert was a Barry Manilow concert that I saw with my sister and a friend and my father at Ravinia Festival outside of Chicago. I have since seen him several other times in concert.

Other concerts include Chuck Barry, The Beach Boys, Chicago, and Larry the Cable Guy, and countless others were listened in on from the other side of the fence at our local county fair. Does opera count as a concert?

  8. Margo Maguire Says:

How about Frank Zappa! I saw him years ago at an outdoor concert. And of course there was Woodstock! No - I didn’t go. I was *this* close, though …

  9. Elizabeth Boyle Says:

Okay, I will totally date myself: my first concert was Shaun Cassidy. Yes, I screamed myself hoarse. But then over the years I’ve seen The Police, Styx, Moody Blues, The Everly Brothers, Elton John. Can’t remember them all, but my most memorable moment was having Billy Joel hold my hand, look into my eyes and sing “She’s Only a Woman to Me.” Sigh.

I wasn’t into concerts. The only band I wanted to see was Guns N Roses…but my parents would NEVER let me go!

I’ve been to many concerts over the years having season tickets for the ‘country concerts’ at Pine Knob Amphitheatre (called something else now). But the concert that stands out in my mind as being ‘out of my mind’ for going was a 1982 Queen concert that my teenaged daughter just had to attend. Well, when tickets went on sale, we were on vacation and happened to be in a small town in middle Pennsylvania. I had the number to call the ticket office at Cobo Hall in Detroit where the concert was to be held to buy tickets. Since my daughter was only 14 at the time, I planned to go with her and take my nephew too. Needless to say, even though I called right at 10AM on the day the tickets went on sale, we still ended up in the nose-bleed section. But, I have to say…in spite of the noise and hardly being able to hear the music, the concert was phenomenal. However, I decided then and there to never go to another rock concert and if my daughter wanted to go to another one, she was going to have to find someone else to take her!

Shana…where have you been? Haven’t heard from you for a long, long time.

  12. Shana Says:

Hey Karen. I’ve been around. I’m working and writing, so I’m really busy at the moment.

I remember my parents going to see concerts at Pine Knob (I was too little to go to concerts when we lived in Michigan).

Elizabeth, I am totally jealous now! I was 100% in lvoe with Shaun Cassidy when I was little. I had a shirt with his picture on it, and I wore it as much as my mom would allow.

My first concert was No Doubt in St. Louis. This weekend is the Decatur Celebration which is a free festival. We have Sheena Easton, Point of Grace, Dennis DeYoung from STYX, and other has beens and who were theys.

  14. Jenna Petersen Says:

P.S. Have you guys seen Music and Lyrics? It’s about a guy who was TOTALLY in a Wham-esque band. It’s fabulous and romantic and fun. Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant. Plus, the songs get in your head (kind of like Wham’s “Wake Me Up”… thanks a lot Shana).

  15. AndreaW Says:

Hmmmm . . . I’ve seen Garth Brooks twice (that man can put on a show!), Hootie and the Blowfish, Alan Jackson, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Rush. There may be more, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

I would love to see Sugarland and Josh Turner in concert someday.

  16. Shana Says:

Jenna, I have seen Music & Lyrics. That video is hilarious!

  17. Lois Says:

Nope, no concerts here. . . but, ah, this past Saturday I did just so happen to go see Phantom of the Opera for the first time. ;)

Wow-wee, let me tell you! :)

    Lois

The first concert I was suppose to go to was a Simon and Garfunkle but we had a huge snowstorm and my boyfriend (now husband) couldn’t get out to the suburbs where I lived and took one of his guy friends instead - I still remind him lol. Luckily I’ve got to see them 2 times now and in fact they were the last one I went to (reunion tour). My very first concert ended up being the Yes. I got to see Elvis in 1983. And I saw Barry Manilow. I would have loved to have gone to a Garth Brooks concert but it was sold out.

  19. catslady Says:

Oh, and just remembered I saw Yanni twice too lol.

  20. Shana Says:

catslady, you saw Elvis! Wow! But wasn’t he dead by 1983…?
