The End of the Harry Potter Saga?

HP

It’s hard to believe it’s finally so close at hand, but one of the summer’s biggest book releases is just around the corner. Just like thousands of other fans, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the day, and I am prepared to line up first thing in the morning on the date of release in order to get my hands on it as soon as possible. And (Gasp!) it’s not a romance.

That’s right. It’s Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, and I am waiting with bated breath along with other Potterphiles to find out just how JK Rowling wraps things up in this final book of the series. For months now, some rather alarming rumors have been doing the rounds, and I have to say that I’m not quite sure what to expect. Apparently a response from Ms. Rowling to a question from one of her fans regarding Harry’s future has led people to believe that she may actually kill Harry off. Is this true? False? Only time will tell. But this much is known: Rowling has admitted that two major characters she didn’t originally intend to kill off will bite the dust! But which two? She’s not saying, and the speculation is running rampant.

Now, as a romance author, my hackles are rising at the thought of such an unhappy ending for the Potter crew. I don’t want to believe that Rowling would kill off one of the main trio of Harry/Ron/Hermione. But at the same time, I can see the reasoning behind such a decision. Talk about adding some major drama! And with the fifth movie due out in theaters around the same time as the book, sales are bound to go through the roof on this one.

So, calling all you Potter fans out there! What do you think? Who will live and who will die? And while you’re at it, what would you like to see happen in this last book? I’m sorry to all the fans of the Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny pairings, but I’m rooting for an eventual Harry/Hermione hook-up. I’d love to see an epilogue several years down the road where we find out that Harry and Hermione ended up together. And I am holding out hope that both Severus Snape and Draco Malfoy end up playing for the good guys. (You know, I’ve always had a thing for those bad boys. ;) )

Please, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions. Speculating is half the fun! And don’t forget to scroll down and check out Robyn’s post on writing and GMC.

Kim–I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the final book of Harry Potter also. Only I’m a big enough nerd that I’ll be there at midnight to get my pre-ordered book Borders!! I also have one ordered on Amazon that will be sent to the house. That way my son and I won’t have to fight over who gets to read it.

I’m in the Ron and Hermione camp. I think they would be so cute together. And I totally agree with you that I would love to see Snape and Draco come out on the good side, but time will tell with that one.

As for who dies, I’m not sure about that one. There are so many characters to choose from. I hope JK Rowling doesn’t decide to kill off one of the three main characters, but like you, I could see the reasoning behind it. It would be nice if she did or had something to tell what happens in the future, but I’m not holding out hope.

Alas, I’m the one person who just never felt curious enough to try Harry Potter. . . besides, I have plenty to read already, I don’t need to add to it with the HP books! LOL :)

Dorothy- my friends and I already are planning on being there at midnight also. Half tempted to wear hogwarts scarves as well.

Am looking forward to both the movie and the book. I could see Snape being killed in trying to do something heroic. Could also see Hagrid being killed trying to save Harry. But we will find out in just over a month.

Midnight, Dorothy? I don’t know. I’m not much of a night owl. If I can make myself stay awake much past 11:00, I might venture out. We’ll see. :)

Hmmm. Hagrid had never occurred to me, Smile0303, but I guess he should have. I could definitely see that happening. I have also wondered about Neville. He has been a pretty important character in the series, though not front and center. I’d hate to see that though. Poor Neville deserves a happy ending. :(

And Lois, I was rather late to join in the Harry Potter mania. It was the first movie that really sparked my interest in the books. Up until then, I wasn’t really into them.

The hard part is not hearing the ending before getting to read it. My oldest daughter is the fanatic and will be there to get it immediately then I get it and then my youngest. She’s moved 6 hrs. away so I’m sure I’ll hear the ending before I get the book (sigh).

This is something I hadn’t thought about when I wrote my first post, but JK Rowling has said that she’s had the ending written for book 7 since she started the series. So, unless she intended for Harry to die all along, I can’t see her changing the ending. IMHO I, too never thought about Hagrid dying, but he could to save Harry. I can see that happening. She has so many main characters to choose from. When we first heard about ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, we heard a major character was going to die and everyone was speculating who it was there and it turned out to be Sirius. Sorry if I let out a spoiler there! What about Mr. Weasley? And JK Rowling hasn’t said if the major characters were on the good side or on the bad side. It could be Lucius Malfoy that gets it, he’s been a major character in the books.

Is there anyone else out there that doesn’t think the latest character that was killed off is really dead??

I hate to break it to you, Kim, but you’re way off with the whole Harry/Hermione match. She’s been setting up the Jenny romance from book 1. I personally don’t think she’ll kill Harry, but I do think more is to come with Neville and perhaps we might lose him among others.

I’m not reading any of the above posts though, and I only skimmed yours Kim, because I don’t want any spoilers!!! I want to be spoiler-free when I happily open the cover. :D

I have mine pre-ordered at Amazon. I was wondering if it would be McGonagal or one of Ron’s parents. I hope they don’t kill off Hagrid…whose gonna take care of his brother?

There is definitely a long list of possibilities, Dorothy. And I learned a long time ago that what Rowling considers a major character, I don’t always think of as a major character. Sirius in Book Five is a good example. I just didn’t think of him as a main character because he didn’t play all that large of a role up until that book.

Sigh. Yes, I know, Robyn. Harry and Hermione will probably never come about, and I do like Ginny. I should probably be rooting for her, as I know the poor girl had an unrequited crush on Harry for a long time. BUT… I do think Rowling is going to surprise us and not everything is going to go quite as expected, so who knows. ;)

Yeah, but she DID kill of Dumbledore. I never expected her to do THAT! I was hoping that Cho would come to her senses and get over Cedric.

Yes, Dumbledore was a surprise. Though I guess I should have seen it coming. Dumbledore was supposedly the only person that Voldemort feared, so of course it only made sense to get him out of the way as soon as possible.

I know there are a lot of Harry/Cho fans out there, brownone, so you’re not alone. She just never stood out for me as a character. And I’ve heard some rumors about something she does in the upcoming movie that is going to pretty much put an end to them as a couple, at least as far as the movie franchise is concerned.

I LOVE HARRY POTTER!!! AM TOTALLY GONNA GO TO THE MIDNIGHT RELEASES!!! I think Harry’s gonna live and Voldy’s not, cause I have a theory that either the ones who live through book 7 or the good guys are on JKRowling’s birthday calendar. So far all the trio, plus all the House teachers and all the Weasleys are alive (and seriously, even Dobby’s birthday was recorded), but I’m worried for Tonks.

I cannot wait either! My son, who is 20, is going to our Chapters at midnight, fully costumed as Malfoy (am making the robes now) and there will be owls, decorations and many costumed people. One of his sisters is accompanying him as Professor Trelawney.

As far as who dies, I shudder to think it will be Harry/Ron/Hermione… I could see Neville, didn’t think of Hagrid but am considering him after the posts above, and I worry that it will be one of the Weasleys (altho it wouldn’t bother me too much if it were Percy). Snape, Malfoy, Mr. Weasley… could be!

Kathryn, our local bookstore did some sort of special Harry Potter celebration when the last book came out. I’m not sure if they will again with this one or not, though I hope they do. Definitely a lot of fun for grown-ups as well as kids.

A good friend of mine who is also a Potterphile is convinced that one of the deaths will be Ginny’s. I don’t see it happening, but she doesn’t like Ginny, so that could be just wishful thinking on her part, LOL. I can definitely see one of the Weaselys though. And I’m fearing for Hagrid more and more. Gulp!

Yes, Dorothy and Catslady, for a while I wondered whether Dumbledore might be faking his death to fool Voldemort. But sadly, I’ve heard the same thing that Brownone has heard. That Rowling has said he is dead, no question.
