I was planning to write today about my favorite love scenes in movies – the scenes that culminate the love story like the end of When Harry Met Sally – when Harry shows up at the party and tells Sally he can’t live without her. They kiss, but it’s the emotion that comes through and makes you love that scene. And then Harry becomes blabbermouth Harry again, and Sally can’t help but laugh, while she’s crying.
Same thing with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in It’s a Wonderful Life. He’s absolutely adamant about leaving town to get himself a life somewhere else. But he realizes he can’t live without Mary. The intensity of emotion in that scene is amazing. Her eyes are bright with tears, he’s beside himself with frustration, wanting her … wanting to leave …
And don’t you just love it when Mark Darcy and Bridget Jones get together at the end of that movie? She’s wearing nothing but a sweater over her undies, and tennis shoes, standing on the very tips of her toes to kiss him in the falling snow. After all of Bridget’s bumbling, she ends up with the right man.
As I said, I was planning to write about all my favorite culmination/love scenes, and I’m not necessarily talking about sex, (although I don’t discount the impact of sex in a love scene, so that’s fine, too, if there’s an emotional impact).
But I’ve got serious brain-freeze this morning, and I can’t think of any more! I need you to tell me … What are the best culmination/love scenes that you can think of? Scenes that send you away from the theater, feeling happy and satisfied.

The Empire Strikes Back, when Han Solo is about to go into carbon freeze, and Princess Leia says, “I love you,” and he says, “I know.”
In the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice when Lizzy is touring Pemberly and Darcy shows up. I love it when she breezes past her aunt and uncle and says, “We must leave at once!” I think that’s the point she realizes she loves him.

I love the scene in “While You Were Sleeping” at the wedding when she objects and says she loves the wrong brother. I also love when she’s trying to explain and she says, “And I fell in love with you” (meaning the family) and Ox says, “You fell in love with ME?” and she laughs and says, “No. Yes. I fell in love with all of you.”
So sweet. I love that movie.
I also love the scene in Hellboy when Hellboy demands Liz’s soul back from Death and they kiss in that gorgeous ball of blue flame that proves they were meant to be together.

Margo, I love that Bridget Jones ending too!
In Love Actually, I liked the scene where Colin Firth (don’t know character’s name) proposes in bad Portuguese. Here are two people that don’t really know each other and can’t communicate that well with each other except in the language of love.

I loved that Bridget Jones ending. What a great example.
I also love the new Pride & Prejudice, when Mr. Darcy finds Lizzie outside his home and he makes the most inane small talk. Then he offers to drive her back to her inn and she says she likes to walk and he says I know. Or something like that. I just love how it’s so clear that he WANTS to talk to her, but simply can’t. Sigh!

Margo,
Your brain-freeze disease has affected me, too! And I watch a gazillion movies!!
The trouble I’m having is when I think of memorable love stories somebody is tragically dying. These usually don’t leave you too satisfied.
Point in case, Ghosts. Love Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore scene when she really knows he is there with her and later, when he tells her he loves her instead of “ditto.” It does end with him heading toward the light and her back to her Pottery Barn but somehow it was still satisfying.
Same with Gone With Wind..wonderful love scene when Rhett gathers up Scarlett and shows her what love is, but he leaves not giving a damn. But so memorable!
Sabrina is a great love movie. Anything with Audrey Hepburn makes it great though.
Loved “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeves. Again, they are both technically dead when they get together, but it works!
And then there is mature love, like in “Golden Pond” with Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. At the end of their years, but with such a strong, time-tested love.

In IQ, while Einstein (Walter Matthaw) is watching his niece and the man she loves (Meg Ryan, Tim Robbins) in the Stargazers field to see the comet, and they kiss. Sigh.

I’m feeling a bit of the brain freeze myself. I’ll blame it on end of book dementia. I have to add the last scene in Never Been Kissed (with Drew Barrymore) when she’s waiting on the pitcher’s mound and it looks like he’s not coming and then he comes running down the bleechers. *sigh*
Notting Hill has several wonderful moments in it and I love the ending as well.
In other movie related news, I saw that their making a sequel to The Butterfly Effect, which I thought was the worst movie ever. It was so depressing and dark – I hated it. So yes, we need a sequel to that. Ick!

Regarding Henry when Harrison Ford’s character (Harry) comes back to his wife, realizing things have changed and that he does love her – again – and he uses the line from the first time they met “I know this great blow fish place” or something like that. I know what he’s going to say but it still gets me every time. *sigh*

If you concentrate on the character and don’t think about the actor, I love the “You had me at hello” scene in Jerry Maguire. He’s finally matured and come to his senses so she can have her happy ever after.
Loved Kathryn Hepburn calling Henry Fonda “You old fart” in the same tone as I love you.
Not a culmination scene per se, but I love the bit in Two Weeks Notice where Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock are having lunch. They don’t realize they’re in love yet but are so in synch, they fix each other’s food — removing the ice from one’s drink, taking the mushrooms from her salad, etc. — without having to say anything because they just know what to do, so they keep talking about business or whatever.
Ooh, ooh, Sabrina — the version with Harrison Ford. His mother and poker-faced secretary made arrangements for him to go get the girl so there’s no delay once he comes to his senses. “You packed my clothes?” “Yes, I was elbows deep in your underwear drawer. It was like touching the Shroud of Turin.”
And going back a bit, I fell in love with Cary Grant in Father Goose. He and Leslie Caron were constantly bickering, name calling, fighting their attraction, so when they ask on the radio for the minister to marry them, the boss replies “Goody-Two-Shoes and the Filthy Beast?!?”
Operation Petticoat is another romantic movie that leaves me with a smile and a happy sigh. Lots of happy endings in that one.

Ooh, I know, how about these:
In “The Wedding Singer,” at the end, where Adam Sandler sings that song, Grow Old With You, to Drew Barrymore. I actually downloaded that song to my computer!!
In “Fools Rush In,” when Alex proposes to Isabel by telling her “you are everything that I never knew I always wanted!!”
In “Sleepless in Seattle,” at the end of the movie when Tom Hanks stretches out his hand to Meg Ryan and she gently places her hand in his. That look that they give each other just gives me chills, like you know that they have finally found what they needed.
As for the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, I think one of my favorite parts is just after Elizabeth accepts Darcy’s proposal. If you look at Darcy, he completely changes. He is a bit stiff and proper in his manner as they are walking along. Then, as soon as she accepts his proposal, he completely relaxes. His facial expressions, his body language all show a man at peace, as though his whole world has finally clicked together. And I love the final, gentle kiss, the perfect way to end this movie.

Another one I’m loving is The Lake House, I was soo in tears when I found out why he wasn’t at the food joint. OH my gosh, Sandra sure can pull off the desperate loving gal to a T. Such a good movie.
