A friend and I were discussing what we absolutely had to have in a book to label it a keeper and we both said the book had to have a hero we could love. Of course the book also had to have a heroine we liked and admired for her strength etc, but we absolutely HAD to love the hero.
My very first book that sold (back when I was writing inspirational romance) had a hero who was a minister…”Pastor Dan.” The senior editor that bought the book said she “just loved the hero.” Which led me to wonder if having a hero you can fall in love with is a must for most readers (and editors!)
I guess before I started writing I never really thought about what I liked in the books I ended up enjoying, certainly never spent time analyzing them. Unless, of course, you count rewriting an ending I didn’t like, or changing the hero or heroine’s history if I didn’t like what they’d been given
What about you? Rewriting endings? Changing backstory? Falling in love with the hero? Or….are you a person who focuses on the heroine?? Inquiging minds want to know….
