Summer shows

Written by Anne Mallory in Jaunty Post

With all the season or series finales playing out, what’s a girl to do until September? I watch about 4-5 hours of TV a week, so I’m not completely rabid, but I like looking forward to certain nights of the week so that I can find out what happens next. And it helps keep track of the days — please try not to make fun of me too much here. Because even when I watch the Daily Show, which announces the date, it’s usually the next day during dinner and the date is the day previous…oh, whatever, you get my rambling drift!

So are there any new shows coming out that you can recommend? I’ve been seeing a lot of things about the show Supernatural. And there’s some dance competition on Thursday nights (?) that looks like something my family could tease me about.

On the other end of things, are there any shows going off air that you are dreading? Alias? Or shows that you love and can’t wait for next season? Lost? 24? Grey’s Anatomy? (for Mary)

Have a great time with the continuing finales this week and chime in here if you have any suggestions for a good show or two I can use to tell Wednesday from Thursday. ;)

Well this week I watched two of my most all time favorites go off air. It was so sad that I nearly cried (I must be moody or something). I hate finding a great show and then it be taken off air…grrr.

So with tears in my eyes I said good-bye to Will and Grace and Charmed. I’m guessing they will be replaced with some such reality-show which I wont watch(hooray for those that do).

As for future shows, I saw an adver. for a show on BBC. I think it was called Hex. It seems to go along the lines of Charmed. So we’ll see when it comes on. As for anything else, I’m not the gal to talk to. Most the shows I watch are on after 10pm and are re-runs.

If you haven’t been watching, and if they do re-runs, How I Met Your Mother is great. The writing is so good. That’s about the only show I watch, but I recommend it highly.

HIMYM was really funny. During the summer, we usually tivo the shows on the Discovery channel, History Channel, Health, etc. that we normally wouldn’t watch during the regular season. So for example, yesterday we watched a documentary on AIDS in Africa. We also actually WATCH our STARZ channel during the off-season.

One show I want to check out this summer is The Closer (TBS or TNT, can’t keep it straight) starring Kyra Sedgewick (Mrs. Kevin Bacon). My dh got hooked on it last year, and it isn’t easy to hook him.

The only reality show I’ve watched was on Discovery (or History, etc.) about Cook’s discovery voyage of the 1700’s. Kind of like Frontier House or Regency House on PBS, except at sea. I think I might have a thing for old sailing ships. :-)

You know, Big Brother All Stars starts in July. That show is SO WRONG and yet I can’t. Stop. Watching. And since they’ll probably bring back my FAVORITE BB contestant, Will from BB2, I am so excited! He was so deliciously evil. Unlike the other ‘houseguests’, he never forgot the camera. So he’d do something naughty and start the other cast members fighting and when they weren’t looking, he’d look right in the camera. And you became his accomplice. Awesome.

So, sigh, I’ll be watching that. Not a lot comes on in the summer, does it? There are a couple of Stephen King specials coming up Desperation in this week (I think it’s tonight, actually) and there is a short story series starting some time this summer, too, starring people like William H. Macy, one of my favs.

At this point, the shows I am most distressed at saying goodbye to until the fall are CSI: Miami, Lost, and Supernatural. After having a pretty large roster of shows that I watched regularly at the beginning of the television season, these three are the only ones I stuck with. I loved Bones, but it got moved around so much on the schedule and put on hiatus so many times that I finally just gave up trying to keep up with it.

Though I had gotten away from watching them over the years, I will fondly look back on Charmed, Will and Grace, and Seventh Heaven. (I started out loving Charmed when it first came on the air, but I don’t think I ever liked it quite as well after Pru was killed.)

Can’t say that I’ve seen much to intrigue me in any of the ads for summer shows so far. There is one called Treasure Hunters that looks like it could have potential. I guess we’ll see.

  7. Mary Says:

Yes, I will go crazy waiting for Grey’s! I’m dying to see what happens to Izzy. Also, 24! Have to wait till January to see what happens to Jack! I didn’t see Alias last night, but I taped it. And tomorrow - Lost!

I hope to catch up on DVD watching this summer. If I could only find a way to have a DVD arrive every day from Blockbuster….
