Special Gifts by Cindy Kirk
Written by Cindy Kirk in Jaunty PostI was just reading a feature article in my local newspaper where they asked various people in the community what was the most special gift they’d ever received. One of the women saidthat her daughter had given her a journal. Throughout the previous year the daughter had written about things the mother had done and why that made her mother so special. Even though it had been twenty years since the woman received the gift of that book, it is still treasured.
What kind of special things have you gotten or given? I’d be interested in knowing since I like to do non-traditional gifts, especially for those few select people who mean the most to me. And Christmas is coming up… How many more shopping days??
The whole notion of giving of yourself also reminded me of a workshop I went to where the speaker said you should give seven “sincere” compliments each day. I tried that for a while. It’s really hard to do (try it yourself if you don’t believe me). So, I’m thinking of doing ONE sincere compliment a day……oh, wait, I’m jumping even further ahead. That sounds suspiciously like a New Year’s resolution….more about that later.
Anyway, for some reason I haven’t yet gotten into the Christmas spirit, so I’m hoping your suggestions will spur me on to making this the best Christmas ever!

Well I’ve already mentioned the paintings with poems I did for my parents sooo I have to think of another great gift.
I did give my sister a wonderful scrapbook including great pics of her and her husband and their daughter. I filled in a few pages and gave her some supplies(since I know she didnt have any) so she could do more on it herself.
For my sister’s birthday I had an author sign a book to her wishing her happy bday.
As far as gifts given to me that mean the world…a doll. One year when my family wasn’t that well off(7 kids, dad got hurt)my mom gathered some crown royal sacks and made a Scarlet-type dress(the green one). She spent many hours awake after we all went to sleep working on these dolls and I loved it. I wish I still had it but my ex-husband broke it(grr).

That’s an interesting question, Cindy. I was trying to remember some of the gifts I have gotten over the years that truly meant the most to me. I was always happiest with the simple gifts, even as a kid. While my brother was crazy about all the game systems that were popular back then and the expensive electronic stuff, and my sister was the fashion conscious clothes horse who HAD to have the designer labels (Do you remember Jordache jeans? She drove my mother crazy about getting her a pair of those one year!) I was always the bookworm who had nothing but books on my list. I still have the two I got for Christmases past that I prized the most. Hard back copies of Little Women and Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott.

Last Christmas my parents gave me a copy of Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. This is a wonderful and touching story and was the first book that I remember reading on my own when I was a child. So it was pretty special that my parents got me a copy now that I have “grown up.”
